Come Learn More about EQUI-KIDS – Attend an OPEN HOUSE

Whatever your interest, this one hour Open House, will provide you with additional information about the EQUI-KIDS mission, programs, riders and opportunities for you to assist in the many aspects of our therapeutic riding facility.  EQUI-KIDS is committed to offering therapeutic services to the special needs individuals in Hampton Roads. During the Open House we will discuss the many benefits therapeutic riding provides to our students. If you already know you want to volunteer, this is your first step in becoming a valuable addition to our team.

Sidewalker Lesson Volunteer Training

Prerequisite:  Attendance at an Open House

One of the most important volunteer positions in our program is the Volunteer Sidewalker. Each lesson requires the support of up to 15 sidewalkers to ensure our students receive the support needed to have a safe and educational lesson.  This two-hour training will introduce you to the EQUI-KIDS rider, safety information and proper sidewalker techniques.  This training is presented by a NARHA Certified Riding Instructor.  (NARHA- North American Riding for the Handicapped Association)

Horse Leader Lesson Volunteer Training

Prerequisite:  Attendance at an Open House and completion of Sidewalker Training

One of the most important roles during a lesson is that of the Horse Leader Volunteer.  These volunteers are responsible for the proper handling and control of the horse during a lesson.  Training will consist of proper grooming, tacking procedures, proper horse handling and leading techniques.  Training is required regardless of your prior experience with horses.  EQUI-KIDS utilizes suggested techniques and equipment as set forth by the NARHA Premier Accredited Center guidelines, which may be different from your prior experience with horses.

Barn Volunteer Training

Prerequisite:  Attendance at an Open House

Barn Volunteer Training is offered for those who are interested in assisting the Weekend Team Leaders in the barn.  This training provides insight to all aspects of horse care such as grooming, mucking stalls, feeding and other tasks in and around the stable area.
